| Historic Hotels of the Rockies Light Up the Holidays with Seasonal Festivities Beginning in November Posted: 25 Oct 2010 12:28 AM PDT Rocky Mountain States (Vocus) October 25, 2010 All of the lodging members of Historic Hotels of the Rockies have welcomed holiday revelers since at least 1939, most even longer; these are places where the traditions of the holiday season can be counted on to create the ultimate gift – treasured memories. This season, many members are celebrating with lighting ceremonies, sleigh rides, caroling, craft shows and of course, visits from Santa. "'Nostalgic', 'steeped in tradition', and 'charming' are a few of the words that come to mind to describe a holiday experience at Historic Hotels of the Rockies. Our members pull out all the stops to make guests' stays extra special at this time of year," said Jim Osterfoss, president of Historic Hotels of the Rockies. Lighting ceremonies are a tradition in many of the towns where Historic Hotels of the Rockies are located, as well as at some of the hotels themselves. The Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs, Colorado greets the season with a stunning display of lights festooned on both the exterior and interior. The event takes place every year on the day after Thanksgiving, November 26, at 6:30 PM. Hundreds gather to wait for Santa to arrive, watch fireworks, listen to local bands and to finally see the entire building and courtyard illuminated by colorful lights. Afterwards, revelers head indoors to warm up with a glass of cider, cocoa or even something stronger at the Polo Lounge. Similarly, the Nagle Warren Mansion and Historic Plains Hotel, both located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, deck the halls from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. At the Nagle Warren Mansion, poinsettias, garlands and Christmas trees bedecked with lights and ornaments set a festive mood indoors, while outside, the celebrated annual Cheyenne Christmas Parade on November 26 attracts crowds. Known as one of the finest holiday parades in the Rocky Mountain region, it features 140 illuminated floats, Santa Claus and marching bands and culminates at the Cheyenne Civic Center for a free concert at 7:00 PM. Afterwards, both the Nagle Warren and the Historic Plains offer guests warming food and drinks. While in the mountains of Colorado ski country, Telluride's New Sheridan Hotel is ideally situated to enjoy holiday libations at the historic bar and catch views of the slopeside Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade on December 24. Meanwhile in Cody, Wyoming, the Irma Hotel and Chamberlain Inn are central locations from which to enjoy local festivities such as the annual December Cody Country Christmas festival where sleigh rides, ice sculptures, a parade and craft fair add to the convivial mood. Other hotels that are gloriously bedecked with holiday trim and lights during the holidays are the Strater Hotel in Durango, Colorado, Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City, South Dakota, Sacajawea Hotel in Three Forks, Montana, and Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Many Historic Hotels of the Rockies join with community partners to help spread holiday cheer. Stay at the Calvert Hotel in Lewistown, Montana in December and make a reservation to ride the Charlie Russell Chew Choo, the state's premier dinner train that offers Polar Runs, complete with elves reading the famous Christmas train story, The Polar Express. On December 3, stroll through this small western town with locals and follow along as the parade wends its way down historic streets. The Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton, Montana, cooperates with four local communities to participate in the Chouteau County Hop and Shop event on December 4. The shops are open late and carolers, roving musicians, and Santa provide traditional entertainment. After strolling, stop by the Grand Union to warm up and admire the 14 foot tree that graces the lobby. Another holiday activity steeped in tradition at Historic Hotels of the Rockies is the custom of afternoon tea. In Colorado, Delaware Hotel in Leadville, Castle Marne in Denver, and Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs each serve guests delightful versions of English tea, often with a Christmas twist that might include the use of one-of-a-kind tea sets, specially prepared menu offerings, and a selection of seasonal teas. At the Nagle Warren Mansion in Cheyenne, holiday guests can sip tea to the accompaniment of costumed carolers. Christmas teas are always extremely popular and advance reservations are recommended.
