Groundbreaking set Friday for $120 million Fort Lee Lodging Center Posted: 22 Oct 2010 04:40 AM PDT PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - A groundbreaking is scheduled for a 1,000-room lodging center at ever-expanding Fort Lee. Site preparation began in August, but Friday's ceremony at the base is intended to mark the official construction start on the seven-story, $120 million military hotel. The lodging center will be the largest operated by the Army's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command. The command provides lodging and vacation destinations around the globe for service members and their families. The lodging facility was opposed by some in the greater Petersburg area. They said it would steer money away from privately run hotels off the base that invested in Fort Lee's expansion. Completion is expected in mid-2012. Copyright 2010 Associated Press.
