The James In Soho And The Lenox In Boston - Hotels Doubling As Art Galleries Posted: 02 Sep 2010 03:06 PM PDT
By Scott Grigelevich, Lenox Brand Ambassador Artist Stephanie Saunders - now on display at Lenox in Boston. Hotels and fine art go together like late-night cravings and room service. Art is simply an expected element in today's vibrant hotel scene, but often times goes unnoticed or under-appreciated by hotel guests and passers-by. Increasingly, hotels are elevating the role of art by giving artists an active space for installations and exhibits. Installation by Sarah Frost of typewriter keys glued to a wall in the lobby of the James. The James, a sleekly designed hotel rising over Grand Street in SoHo was recentlyfeatured in The New York Times for hiring a curator whose job description is to reflect the artistic microclimate of SoHo. "It used to be that you could get away with just slapping something up in the lobby," said Sean Hennessey of Lodging Investment Advisors, "but more and more customers are looking and evaluating it much more closely." Here at The Lenox and similar to the James in SoHo, we've launched Lenox Originals Art Series. A recent partnership with renowned DTR Modern Galleries (Boston, Palm Beach, New York) has already graced our lobby with Hunt Slonem's "Nature. Nurtured." show. And back in May, we featured a brief installation by Damien Hirst. Currently we're showing an exhibit by Stephanie Saunders, an emerging artist from Boston's thriving local art scene. Whether there are renowned or emerging artists, so far Lenox guests and Boston locals are loving our recent infusion of original artwork, making our 110-year-old boutique hotel as original as ever! Lenox Originals is a continuing art series inspired by Lenox 1900, a campaign celebrating Lenox Hotel's rich 110-year history in the arts and beyond. Legendary Lenox guests include American Painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), American art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924) and famed Italian tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921). All artwork featured is available for purchase - please visit Lenox Hotel at 61 Exeter Street in Boston's Back Bay or call Scott Grigelevich at (617) 536-5300 for more details. No comments yet.
