ATLANTA (AP) A handful of Atlanta hotels are shutting their doors despite signs of recovery following a serious industry downturn.

The Wyndham Garden Hotel and Baymont Inn and Suites on Piedmont Avenue are expected to close sometime during the middle of August. Officials at Marriott's Renaissance Hotel on West Peachtree Street say they're laying off 142 employees in anticipation of closing later this year.

Spokesman Jeff Flaherty says Marriott is moving 75 percent of the laid-off Renaissance staff to other hotels in the chain.
Industry experts say it comes as the lodging industry tries to rebound from ongoing stress.

The cycle has happened before. The Buckhead and Midtown W hotels were respectively a Crowne Plaza and a Sheraton just a few years ago.
