Some lawmakers are paying a portion of their lodging out of their own pocket this session...
House majority leader Al Carlson, is asking fellow lawmakers to increase the housing expense reimbursement.

About 60% of the lawmakers from outside the Bismarck Mandan area stay in hotels.

During the session lawmakers are reimbursed for up to $1040 in lodging costs.

Carlson says because of a high demand for rooms Carlson says many hotels won't give lawmakers that rate.

He's asking the rate be increased to $1,228 a month...

(Rep. Al Carlson / (R) Fargo "No cash is ever made by a legislator, no money they make on housing. They only get reimbursed for what their exact costs are up to a given figure. A number of them are paying over that figure, that's why this bill is introduced."

The bill links the housing rate for North Dakota legislators to the federal rate for traveling employees.
